Sphene

Also called Titanite, Sphene is known as the most difficult gem to photograph, this is because of its intense birefringence which is when the light entering the stone splits into two, as well as its high dispersion creating this sort of fuzziness in the stone and actually has more “fire” then diamond. Sphene for that reason is best to be seen in person or in video

Ranging from bright yellow to bright green it will flash red and yellow in the stone as you turn it, its truly one of most wild and interesting gems to see which has made it a highly sought after collectors gem. Its typically found in Russia and Brazil but also can be found in Canda, Pakistan, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. Its chemical structure is also very interesting being its made of calcium, titanium and silica

Hardness: 5 – 5.5
