Libyan Glass

Libyan desert glass is a naturally occurring silica glass created by the intense heat and pressure from the impact of a meteorite in silica rich sands between Egypt and Libya around the Sahara Desert. Libyan glass is a type of impactite which are similar to tektites with the key difference being tektites are when a meteorite strikes silica rich sand and ejects them far away creating a unique bumpy surface of the glass while impactites are formed in the same way but stayed closer to the original site leaving a smoother surface. They have a yellowish hue from trace elements in the sand trapped in the silica upon formation and have been prized by even the ancient Egyptians with one in Tutankhamen scarab beetle! They are still highly prized and sought after today but just like Moldavite there are many fakes on the market and telling the difference between a fake and naturally formed material is extremely difficult without a trained eye so always buy from a trusted source!
